Starry Night

Acrylic and joint compound on canvas (a.k.a. spackle)

I was recently asked permission for one of my Japantown photos to be used for the 2009 San Francisco Schmap Guide. Before being contacted by the editor, I had not heard of Schmap. I normally check out travel guides from the library. Traditonal travel guides are not heavily laden with images, so I typically do a Google image search, and corresponding maps/directions. Schmap combines all of these things, and also has an iPhone version! I was flattered to have my photo included, and am excited to have found such a useful travel guide to add to my reading list!

The elephant in the room

The elephant in the room

I received the theme "the elephant in the room" for The Sketchbook Project. I am quite excited to have this theme. Besides my love for the actual animal, I am interested in exploring the idiom. In this entry, the metaphorical becomes the physical...the feeling of being the awkward, unspoken truth in the room, of one's presence being a physical reminder of something people may want to sweep under the rug. The pages of the sketchbook are delicate, much more suited to pencil than paint. I am considering adhering a few pages together to build up the thickness for paint.

Shelter

Shelter

My latest pastel was inspired by a charcoal drawing in my moleskin. I decided to go a different direction in composition for the pastel. I also used different color palettes for each figure. I chose a golden palette for him, while she was done in a primarily lavender palette, as though she is in the shadow. Yet, I think both figures convey similar emotion, despite the different palette.

Eve

Eve

Latest pastel- I really enjoy working with skin tone, shadows, and highlights. I absolutely love soft pastel. Though I do wish my white keyboard wasn’t turning blush. I half expect Steve Jobs to show up and revoke my MacBook privileges.
